Hey guys i'm not really sure i can post non-GW tech problems here but you guys are the most tech savy ppl i know and this is a game-tech problem.

I was trying to use one of those emulator things for my computer so I could play one of my favorite games i liked when i was a lil kid(legend of zelda the wind waker).

Now i got everything to run all good and well .. but for some reason my computer just jacks up to 100% CPU and stays there(it also makes my computer make a dreadfully loud noise that you can hear across the house). Now im not sure if i just have a bad computer(ill post some specs in a minute even tho im not 100% sure what they mean) or if its like a tech problem I can easily fix.

computer specs:

processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80 GHz
Memory(Ram): 3.00 GB
system type: 32-bit Operating system
model:a6230n

If you guys need more info i can provide(if i know how to)

1. Never heard of a gamecube emulator that worked worth beans.
2. You'd need ridiculous GPU and CPU power to run a gamecube emulator. That's probably your problem.

ok i know what CPU is........ but GPU?
and yea the thing works.. i just cant play it w/out makeing a sound come out of my computer that sounds like a screaming banshee. thats the problem w/ it.. i just wanted to know if there was a way to fix that :P

GPU-Graphics Processing Unit or your graphics card

The noise is probably your computer's fan trying to get rid of excess heat.

The only thing you can do really is buy a Gamecube and just play it there or maybe get a more powerful computer. I don't think you can do anything in your current setup to stop the noise.

Yea from all my experience no emulators after the N64 era worked well at all.

As far as the noise goes. Im not sure what could be causing it besides the fan kicking up speed to dissipate heat. If its really that loud and not and exaggeration you might want to clean out the fins and put some turbine oil in the sleeve. Heat is bad for Processors,especially in the summer when ambient temps are up.

ok ill try cleaning the fan off. and im really not exaggerating about the noise.. iwent across my house and could still hear the noise.

thx for the tips. i guess my computer isnt as good as i thought. i had one of my friends try thi and it took like 50% of their CPU instead of the full 100% it took for mine.

I've never bothered emulating anything more recent than an N64 - well, apart from the old Playstation, I suppose.

Do bear in mind that posession and usage of "roms" is illegal, k?

I second this. I'm in and out of my case pretty frequently and usually give a look-over for dust -- tends to look pretty clean in there. But then I started having the same problems as the OP when I'd run Guild Wars, the horrific whirring noise like there was a jet getting ready to take off in there. Finally invested in a natural-bristle brush to brush out the processor fins while doing the compressed air thing, and was shocked by the dust I got out. Since then, the machine runs quietly under heavy load.

I've seen GC Emulators running on alienware systems that still dosent produce the frames a Gamecube could.

You're better off buying a cube and your old favorite games if you want to play them again.

Personally.. you can probably get good deals on GC games at half.com, just be wary of the sellers of course. My expierence though of half.com was very very good though.

I kept all my GC stuff. Still fully working.

Only if you don't own them. If you possess ROM's of games you do not own, you stole them and therefore are illegal. If you own the actual hard copy of the game I think it's fine. Besides, you can even make your own ROM's with the right tools. Even GC disc's. Certain LG DVD rom drives are able to read the GC discs.

That's what I thought for many years, untill I had a pretty long discussion with someone on a forum and he ended with linking me to the actually law as it is.
It clearly stated that it wasnt allowed wether you owned the game or not.
(at least in Denmark. sure it might be different in other countries, who knows)

hmmm my friend failed to mention that. ill keep that in mind.

also ty for the halfprice.com thing. Before i had gone to the emulator thing i had checked local gamestops and things like that w/ no luck. Now, i do know the Wii systems can play it.. but really i have no interest in Wii games and id rather fork over $50 for a gamecube then $200+ for a Wii system.

hmm ok well.. time to go do a hard delete of those illegal roms. ty for telling me <3.

In order for these roms to be produced, the software has to be reverse-engineered, which is a breach of copyright. As Falkin said, the old "I own the original so the rom is legal" argument was used for years, but it was never actually true.

Just take a look at MAME - back in the day there used to be thouands of rom sites, now there are none. Just thousands of equally illegal torrent sites...

I guess it's because, once you run a ROM on a platform it was never meant for, you can mod the hell out of it and like you said all that reverse engineering.

Well I don't see the purpose of wasting 30 gigs of space for a few GC roms anymore anyway when my PC can't even handle them and I still have all the games on the cube.

Exactly what I did, Bob. Kept the Gamecube for all the great GC games (yes, there were plenty!), and for everything else Ninty-orientated, there's the Wii's VC.

Not forgetting the options available for the PS3 and 360, of course - oh, and the PSP and DS family. Retro nowadays is a lot simpler and totally legal - it just costs money

Ooh - ooh - nearly forgot Steam. Just bought the long-awaited Monkey Island 2 SE - woot!
